I saw the low reviews, and felt compelled to write. Mr. Bennett Lee has been the principal since 2001. After having our child attend school for the last five years, I've watched the man really carry the school on his shoulders. He has an open door policy and is very responsive to inquiries. He is extremely visible and engages with all the students. His energy is contagious and his enthusiasm for the well-being of the students and the school is very endearing. Our son is very shy and reserved, but he is very happy with school and loves watching the interaction of her friends with the principal and staff. I've witness Mr. Lee and the staff meticulously planning the design of the current beautiful school from the inside out. My daughter is currently attending another elementary school out of the district due to our relocation. We miss McCoppin dearly and in parting wanted to really give a shout out to the amazing staff, parents and children. We want to give the credit to the principal. Mr. Lee. He is truly an outstanding leader who acknowledges concerns and dives right in to right any concerns. We have visited many schools during our relocation away from San Francisco and we have yet to find a school with the same energy, or aura of love and care

McCoppin Elementary has gone down the drain. After looking like a dump for years (non-functioning computer lab, dilipidated student furniture, etc.) improvements were suddenly made because of a new literacy program. but the program is just a bandage masking deeper issues, such as bad decision-making. The program itself wasn't even approved by teachers even though all the extra work and hours needed is required on their behalf. The school is very poorly managed. Many parents pull their kids out of McCoppin as soon as they get of the waiting list elsewhere. Bullying is a problem - not much in the way of students, but in terms of workplace. Many good teachers disappear with no plausible explanation. Poor leadership here has had a very negative impact.
